How Is AI Reshaping AP Practice in Cancer Care?

At JADPRO Live 2025, I attended an APSHO Pop-Up session on how artificial intelligence (AI) is influencing advanced practitioners’ (APs’) roles in hematology/ oncology. I’m amazed with the rapid advancement of AI into many aspects of health care nowadays. I would love to hear about your experience of AI in your practice and what you anticipate will be the future of AP practice in cancer care.

Before even realizing it, AI has already gradually weaved itself into my daily practice. I first heard about OpenEvidence, an AI-powered medical search platform, from my PCP when I asked her a question about my health status. She sent me a message on my patient portal to address my question with supporting evidence, including references to current practice guidelines and the latest published data. My first impression was how much time my PCP spent to do such a thorough literature review answering my question. To satisfy my curiosity, I downloaded the app to see how it works. It was astonishing that within a few seconds after I typed in a question, OpenEvidence provided a detailed description of an evidence-based analysis. From that moment, I fell in love with OpenEvidence and have been using it regularly to help me efficiently translate clinical evidence into an individualized care plan for my patients.

I believe in the next decade, AI will continue to transform AP roles in hematology/oncology practice. In the era of evidence-based practice, AI-augmented tools can help APs synthesize comprehensive literature data more effectively to support clinical decision-making and help patients develop an individualized treatment plan. In my opinion, AI will not replace our clinical expertise; instead, it will reshape workflows more efficiently and free APs from time-consuming paperwork to allow us more time for person-to-person communication with our patients.

What are your experiences of utilizing AI tools in your practice? Are you concerned that AI might replace AP clinicians? I would like to hear about your thoughts on how AP roles may be influenced by AI in the future of cancer care.
